Description:
We are planning to conduct a conflict-simulation (simulation-game) together with students from Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan. The simulation will be embedded in a 7day Seminar, including Preparation and Evaluation. The simulation offers an excellent chance for a change of perspective and thereby increases the participant's comprehension of the simulated conflict. All participants will slip into the role of one of the main stakeholders of the conflict and try to enforce his/her interests and to achieve his/her goals. Through the simulation political processes and dynamics can be experienced by this the participants get a chance to develop personal, alternative models of explanation for the progress of conflict. Accordingly the Seminar facilitates active learning and constitutes an extension to prevail cognitive acquirement of knowledge.
Target-Group:
The target-group of the Seminar are students and postgraduates of political science and international relations. They gain insight on what "bargaining" is all about and what it means to deal with unintended consequences under pressure of time. This is a valuable endorsement to theoretical contents of their studies. At the same time the students can test their individual negotiating skills and cultivate fundamental competencies like their ability to work in teams, to lead and to elaborate problem-solving strategies. Furthermore the students will have the chance to discuss the method and their ideas of conflicttransformation with stuff from local NGOs that are working in the field of conflict-management and will be introduced thus to this occupational area.
Goals:
Mainly the seminar has the following objectives:
- Introduction to the method of simulation-gaming as superior objective: together we want toexperience and discuss the possibilities of the method for sustainable knowledge-transfer and how and what kind of surplus it could bring to studies of political science. Thereafter we want to analyse the transferability to universities in Caucasus. So within the Evaluation we focus on dissemination of the method by elaborating first ideas for simulation-games at the participant's universities and look into the chances and risks of implementation. At the end of the Seminar participants should have sufficient motivation and first ideas for organizing and conducting simulation-games at their home-university.
- Provide insights into the simulated conflict: Besides the expertise about the conflict the simulation reveals coercions and options of actions of the stakeholders. This actor-centred view on the conflict will be discussed and judged in the scope of peace- and conflict-research.
